Description |
Permalloy (High Permeability) — a permalloy rod is not itself magnetic, but if the rod is aligned with a preexisting magnetic field such as the Earth’s or a magnet’s, it becomes magnetic enough to pick up small pieces of iron. |

Tips |
- Iron filings (or small strip of iron) stick to a permalloy bar held parallel to the earth’s magnetic field but fall off when it is held perpendicular.
- Hold a permalloy rod near a compass needle.
