Description A plastic box that contains “pennies” (round aluminum cutouts) painted green on one side and yellow on the other. Use this to show the concept of entropy.

Tips
  • Procedure:
    • Start by placing all the pennies with one color visible.
    • When the tray is shaken, the pennies begin to flip dependent on how hard you are shaking it.
    • Eventually, an equilibrium is reached with approximately equal numbers of greens and yellows.
    • Further shaking will not return them to the way you originally placed the pennies.
    • If only a few pennies are used, the system will occasionally return to its original state. This shows the dependence upon the number of particles in the system. source
