Demo Number 278
Location Shelf 48
Description This device is used to show how the amplitude and phase of an oscillatory system vary with the frequency and amplitude of a driver, and with damping.

Tips
  • The large wheel with the pointer is driven by the variable speed motor. The speed of the motor may be adjusted using the potentiometer on the power supply. As you vary the speed of the motor, the amplitude and phase of the oscillation may be clearly viewed. You may also add damping by passing a current through the coils on the base of the device using an external power supply; this eddy current damping is proportional to speed. The manual provides more details, you can find it in the box with this device.
  • It can be helpful to use a newer DC supply to monitor the current in the electromagnet.
