Superconductivity allows magnetic levitation, transmission of electrical power with no loss, and other intriguing phenomena. However, fundamental and unsolved questions remain in the fascinating quantum mechanical phenomenon of superconductivity. Laura Greene, Past-President of the American Physical Society, will discuss the beauty and strangeness of “quantum materials” such as superconductors, as well as the challenges that we have to face before we can make use of them in our everyday lives.
