- Procedure:
- Fill glasses with water, place them on the plate suspended by the ropes.
- Slowly begin to swing the tray holding the glasses. Swing higher and higher then make a full circle.
- The glasses will continue to hold water as they are upsidedown. With a little practice, the demonstrator can reliably swing the glass in circles and even overhead.
- The simple pendulum shows that the net force acting on the glass is always directed nearly radially, pinning the glass to the tray
- Using food coloring can improve visibility (but is also more problematic if it spills).
