HOOP AND DISK

Demo Number 048
Location Shelf 20
Description A metal hoop and a wooden disk have equal masses and equal diameters. When you place the ring and disc on an inclined plane and release them, they accelerate at noticeably different rates as they roll down the inclined plane.
 Related Demos 041, 042
Tips
  • The smaller moment of inertia of the wooden disk leads to a larger acceleration, although both have the same kinetic energy at the bottom of the ramp.
  • You will need:
    • Inclined plane
    • Lab stand
