Observation of Exact Fractals in Spin Waves

Mingzhong Wu’s group in our department observed spontaneous exact fractals in nonlinear systems for the first time.  Their experiments made use of nonlinear spin waves in magnonic crystals, but the approach they used is of a general nature and can be applied to achieve similar fractals in other nonlinear systems.  The results have been featured in a paper, with Daniel Richardson being the first author, that has been accepted for publication by Physical Review Letters in August 2018.
