Thin-film Solar Cell Research
The goal of the Colorado State Photovoltaics Research Lab is to understand the differences between thin-film polycrystalline solar cells and their single-crystal counterparts. In recent years, the more economical thin-film cells have achieved approximately two-thirds the efficiencies of crystalline cells with similar band gaps. Much of the work at Colorado State involves careful measurements and various analysis techniques to quantitatively separate the individual losses in a solar cell. The program collaborates closely with several other labs in the U.S. and abroad, including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado.
