Our research group uses ultrastable lasers to study simple atoms (such as hydrogen and antihydrogen). Ultimately, such measurements test fundamental theories such as quantum electrodynamics. Our experiments can be made more precise with cold atoms so we are also investigating laser cooling simple atoms, which requires the development of high power UV lasers.
